Water softeners and salt-free water treatment in Tucson, AZ

Tucson's water story is different from Phoenix's. Most of it is Colorado River water that Tucson Water banks underground and pumps back up, blended with groundwater from the Central Well Field. Tucson Water itself says that mix is what makes the water hard, and it varies enough by neighborhood that the city publishes it by address.

Hardness
Tucson Water does not print a single hardness range in its 2025 report. It publishes water quality by address instead, at tucsonaz.gov/water/mywaterquality, and its own hard water page explains that hardness rises where the area's hard groundwater mixes with CAP water. Our free water test gives you the number at your tap.
Where it comes from
About 78 percent recharged Colorado River water (delivered by the Central Arizona Project, stored in the aquifer at the Avra Valley and Pima Mine Road facilities and recovered through wells) and about 22 percent from the Central Well Field.
Disinfectant
Chlorine, 0.94 to 1.07 ppm across 2025

What that means for a Tucson home

On the USGS scale, water above 180 mg/L (about 10.5 gpg) is very hard. Because Tucson Water does not publish one number for the whole city, the only reliable figure for your home is a test at your tap. We do that for free before we recommend anything.

Tucson Water serves more than 244,000 households and businesses on its main system and runs 138 active drinking-water wells.

Which system fits Tucson water

Our Soft-Tec® salt-free system is built for city water. It needs hardness under 75 gpg, water pressure between 40 and 100 psi, and essentially no iron, sulfur or manganese. Tucson Water does not publish one range, but every published range on our Arizona page tops out at 25 gpg or less, a long way under 75; the free test confirms your home. It keeps scale from bonding to your plumbing without salt, without wasted water and without electricity, and the minerals stay in your drinking water. How Soft-Tec works.

A salt-based softener is the better answer for well water, for water outside those limits, and for anyone who specifically wants the hardness minerals taken out. We install those too. The Hybrid Water Softener.

Tucson Water disinfects with chlorine. Stage two of our whole-home system is a coconut-shell carbon filter, designed to reduce chlorine and chloramine taste and odor.
