Arizona hard water, city by city
We install salt-free scale control and water softeners across the Phoenix valley and the Tucson area. Below is what each city's own water utility publishes about its water, with the source for every number. On the USGS scale, anything over 10.5 grains per gallon is very hard.
Phoenix valley
| City | Hardness | Water provider | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix | 10 to 17.6 gpg | City of Phoenix Water Services | 2025 report |
| Glendale | Not published as one range | City of Glendale Water Services | Utility web page |
| Scottsdale | 13 to 17 gpg | Scottsdale Water | 2025 report |
| Mesa | 0.4 to 25 gpg | City of Mesa Water Resources | 2025 report |
| Chandler | 10.1 to 16.8 gpg | City of Chandler Water | 2025 report |
| Gilbert | 6.6 to 17.5 gpg | Town of Gilbert Water | 2025 report |
Tucson area
| City | Hardness | Water provider | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tucson | Not published as one range | Tucson Water | Utility web page |
| Marana | 8 to 18 gpg | Marana Water | October 2024 report |
| Oro Valley | 2.1 to 15.8 gpg | Oro Valley Water Utility | Utility web page |
How to read these numbers
Utilities report hardness in milligrams per liter (mg/L, the same as ppm) of calcium carbonate. Divide by 17.1 to get grains per gallon, the unit softeners are sized in. The USGS classes water under 60 mg/L as soft, 61 to 120 as moderately hard, 121 to 180 as hard and anything above 180 as very hard. Every city here that publishes a range reaches the very hard band somewhere in its system.
A citywide range is a starting point, not your number. Phoenix runs five treatment plants, Mesa has three supply zones with different averages, and Marana operates several separate systems. That is why every quote we give starts with a free test at your tap.
Not on the list?
We also install in Tempe, Queen Creek, Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear and Avondale. Those cities don't have a page here yet because we only publish a city once we've read its utility's own water report. We cover the Phoenix valley south to Tucson and the towns in between, so if yours isn't named, call (623) 400-7582 or ask for a free quote and we'll tell you straight away whether we serve your address.
